How To Apres-Ski In The Town Of The Blue Mountains

As a realtor in the Town of the Blue Mountains, I’m often asked about the winter ski culture here in the Town of the Blue Mountains. My answer is always I love the outdoors, and living here is a big part of that lifestyle. As a parent I love the freedom my children experience, learning to ski with their friends every weekend. I love their enthusiasm about being outside enjoying the fresh air and most importantly how tired they are after a long day outdoors.

Arguably one of the best parts of the local ski culture living here in the Town of the Blue Mountains and Collingwood is the après-ski scene. There is nothing better than coming off the hill after a great day of making turns and meeting up with friends and family around a table full of tasty food and cold libations. The memories that are made on and off the hill are what dreams are made of.

Whether you’re new here or you’ve grown up skiing in the Blue Mountains, participating in après-ski is all part of a great ski season.

Where Do You Après-Ski?

If you’re a member of one of the many private clubs in the area I would highly recommend looking into their extensive social calendars. They offer a ton of programs for both you and your family. Your children can enjoy fun activities at the end of the day such as tobogganing and themed crafts and while they are busy mom and dad can enjoy a nice glass of wine or local craft beer at the club bar while listening to live music and socializing.

If you’re not a member of the private ski clubs, fear not as there are tons of other opportunities to apres-ski like a winter warrior.

One of my favourite spots is The Alphorn located on highway 26 in Craigleigth. This local classic swiss restaurant is famous for its Wienerschnitzel, which was named the best in Canada by Ski Canada magazine. Opened in the 1980s this landmark is a must-visit for anyone new to the area. Celebrating a birthday, even more reason to check it out. Locals young and old are begging to celebrate their special day here.

Pro tip!  Make sure you don’t ring the cowbell because then you’re responsible for drinks for everybody.

Another fantastic option is the newly renovated Penny’s Motel in Thornbury. This boutique motel is rich in 70’s esthetic and offers a great apres-ski menu. If you love oysters and sitting by the bar and chatting it up with the locals then, this is the place to be. Their outdoor courtyard is the perfect spot to enjoy a sunny afternoon with its three fire pits and Muskoka chairs.

Pro Tip! Bivalve supplies the oysters and they are a must-try here.

Jozo’s, the original apres-ski, is located conveniently at the base of the Happy Valley Express chairlift at Blue Mountain Resort. Named after the founder of Blue Mountain, Jozo Weider, you are guaranteed to have an excellent time. Enjoy some wings and nachos while watching the hill light up as night skiers come out for some turns.

Pro Tip! Make sure to book a reservation during the weekends and peak holiday seasons, it fills up fast for a reason.

If you’re looking for something in the heart of the Blue Mountain Village North Winds Brewery is definitely a spot you don’t want to miss. Craft beer expertly made, inspired by global flavours, and incredible food all showcased in a refreshingly low-key setting. The backdrop of the restaurant is an inside peek at the extensive process that goes into making some of the best craft beer on the escarpment. If you are staying in the Village and want to head back to your condo for something a little more low-key, you can order your food and beer to go.

Pro Tip! No matter what you plan to do, make sure you plan responsibly. Most private clubs offer a shuttle or have taxi services available. If you’re part of the Blue Mountain Village Association they also have a shuttle service, but make sure to plan ahead as they require pre-booking.

How to Apres-Ski at Home

If you want to avoid the hassle of planning an afternoon out, why not après at home? In truth, this is my favourite place to be after a long day on the hill. The dress code is long johns and slippers and tired kids can settle into their nightly routine.

When I après at home I like to keep it simple. I make sure to stock up on some great wine, craft beer, and simple ingredients to throw together easy snacks and appetizers.

A charcuterie board is always a great choice. Everyone loves it, and there’s always a little something for every. If you don’t feel like making a charcuterie board, I recommend ordering one from the Cheese Gallery in Thornbury or having the experts at Culinary Designs put together a meal or a charcuterie for you. If you are closer to Collingwood Dags and Willows is an equally excellent choice for ordering in.

My go-to recipe that never fails to be a crowd-pleaser is baked brie. Always easy to make, requiring very little time and effort to create something delicious.

Perhaps you may also need a brand-new chalet to go with your apres-ski plans! For more information about living, buying, and selling in the Blue Mountains area, please feel free to reach out. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you on the slopes!
